2018 Markus Schramm est nommé président de BMW Motorrad et remplace Hendrik Von Kuenheim

Au début du xxe siècle, la société débute comme fabricant de moteurs d'avions notamment pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. BMW fabrique sa première motocyclette en 1923, la R 32, qui est dotée d'un moteur flat-twin boxer. BMW Motorrad utilise toujours la configuration en flat-twin boxer mais a diversifié ses motorisations en proposant également des motos dotées de quatre et six cylindres en ligne.
